It’s been proved that we must need sleep for good health and healthy life. A pleasant night’s sleep can benefit problem-solving, stress management, and health recovery. Lack of sleep may have a negative impact on our mental and physical health.
During each of these phases, our body and brain behave differently. We alternate between 4 stages of sleep; non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during the course of the night.
What Transpires in the Brain When we sleep?
Researchers are still exploring how sleep affects humans. Even while we’ve learned a lot about sleep, there are still many unanswered questions.
We are aware that our sleep pattern is heavily influenced by brain chemicals. Chemicals called neurotransmitters aid in nerve communication. Depending on whose neurons (nerve cells) they are working on, they determine whether we are awake or asleep:
- Serotonin and norepinephrine are produced by neurons in the brainstem, which connects the brain and spinal cord. When we are awake, these hormones keep our brains working.
- Our ability to fall asleep is caused by neurons in the brain’s base. These neurons appear to suppress the messages that keep us awake.

Reasons Why We Must Need Sleep
We benefit much from sleep. We require it for:
1. We Grow during Sleep
Growth is supported by deep sleep (sleep that is difficult to get up from) in children and young people. This kind of sleep results in the body producing growth hormone. The body also produces more proteins, which are necessary for cell development and damage repair.
2. Our Nervous System Functions Well
Lack of sleep impairs our memory, performance, and capacity for clear thought. Nervous system function. A person may even have neurological issues, such as mood swings and hallucinations if they are extremely sleep deprived. Sleep benefits our nerve cells as well. They are at their best because they can repair themselves. Additionally, certain nerve connections have a chance to activate, enhancing our brain function and capacity for thought.
3. Survival
Proper sleep and supportive treatment help us to survive in any conditions. It helps our immune system to withstand any damage to our body parts.
Scientists are still trying to figure out why sleep is so important. Animal studies, however, have demonstrated that a lack of REM sleep can shorten lifespans. The immune system, which guards against infections, may be harmed by sleep deprivation.
4. Sleep Improve Health
Obesity, diabetes, and heart issues are just a few of the conditions that people who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to develop.

What is sleep deprivation?
We don’t receive all the sleep we require when we’re sleep-deprived and that may be cause of Sleep Disorders. Sleep deprivation symptoms include:
- After a few minutes of lying down, falling asleep.
- Groggy throughout the day.
- Drowsing for microsleeps, which are brief intervals of sleep when we are otherwise awake during the day.
- Lack of sleep may be harmful. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driving while fatigued results in roughly 100,000 automobile accidents annually. 1,500 people die as a result of it. Pull over if we start to become fatigued while driving. Driving when fatigued is dangerous.

Sleep is really an important factor that affects our entire life. We must need sleep, especially 7 hours sleep is considered good for health. Proper sleep adds days to our life. Three in the non-REM Stage plus One REM sleep are 4 stages of Sleep that we all must complete. Sleep is an integral aspect of our lives and is far from being a passive condition. It supports our body’s need for relaxation, renewal, and repair.
